From Principal’s Desk

Dear staff, Students and well-wishers,

As we find ourselves confined to our homes during this lockdown under the threat of COVID-19,  it is a real test of our resiliency and resolve to cope with stress and other negative effects. As Jesuit institution that believes in innovation in teaching -learning and creative thinking, a swift decision was taken during the sudden turn of events to by switching over to online mode of lectures using latest apps and tools at our disposal. I would like to thank all the faculty members who have been working harder than normal days, by preparing classes to be delivered through audio or video lectures, online or recorded; preparing lecture notes and Power Point Presentations to be transported via WhatsApp or e-mails to students, located not just in the vicinity but in remote areas of North Bengal region and even beyond the state boundary. Bio-Science departments have employed latest modes of mass communication by successfully organising webinars; thereby, providing taste of virtual yet very exciting seminar on the challenges & opportunities in medical and clinical world for diagnosing this coronavirus. Others are working in preparation for National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) later this year. I am sure students have been utilising the time fruitfully not just keeping abreast of what’s happening around the world but keeping their minds alert and sharp by updating their knowledge whereas some have even been honing their skills in song and dance or new musical instruments!

we Jesuits living in the campus had to stay put; but we have a large green campus to walk around and take fresh air. Our daily wage workers and conservancy staff have resumed work and ensured cleanliness of the college building and campus as large. It was very satisfying to reach out with relief materials to the daily wage workers, farmers, tea plantation workers and other families in distress. Once again I take this opportunity to thank all the staff and many students, including some old students and well-wishers who generously contributed towards this noble cause. I also thank our Group-D staff who helped in packing and distribution of food grains. This shows that our commitment to the poor and needy is so very strong making the social outreach as flagship programme of our college.

Lifting of the nationwide lockdown is still a week away and educational institutions may be allowed functioning only after the first week of June. There are uncertainties abound with fear and suspicion of this ‘ghost’ hounding human psyche’. But one thing is for sure— humanity and we all will bounce back from this traumatic experience. World may never be the same again as some expert warn but we will sail through! Before reopening the college, we will circulate NBU notifications as well as other instructions to keep everyone safe and secure.

Fr. Dr. Lalit P. Tirkey, S. J.

The Origins

Darjeeling  Jesuits, members of the Society of Jesus, took the initiative to establish three University Colleges in North Bengal and Sikkim. St. Joseph's College at North Point, Darjeeling, was established in 1927. Loyola College of Education in Namchi, Sikkim, came into existence in 1993, as the Jesuit contribution to the people of Sikkim. North Bengal St. Xavier's College at Rajganj was established in 2007, modeled after the famous St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, which traces its origin to 1860. Here we may also note that the Jesuits were invited by the Royal Government of Bhutan in early 1970s to pioneer modern education in Bhutan, and after helping the Bhutan Government to establish a network of Residential Schools our efforts culminated in the establishment of the very first college of Bhutan - Sherubtse College in Kanglung near Tashiganj. ... Recently all the Jesuits involved in the Colleges in Darjeeling Jesuits Province came together to review our efforts to evolve a common Statement of Vision. While reviewing the quality of our educational efforts a consensus emerged that there is a perceptible qualitative difference among most of the graduates of our colleges. Empirically this difference may be seen in the following aspects: their overall excellence in academics, social commitment, leadership qualities, and professional lives; their employability, because our graduates tend to be preferred by the employers; their growth in maturity; and their sense of belonging and loyalty to their alma mater. It was agreed that such qualitative, positive difference is largely because of our efforts to combine academic excellence with various co-curricular activities as an essential part of our system, the culture of our campuses where trust, respect and collaboration are actively fostered at all levels, and the atmosphere of our campuses where close interaction among the administration, staff and students are predominant.
